Mission impenetrable: are Hollywood blockbusters losing
the plot?

From Fast & Furious to the Avengers, Terminator and
Jurassic World, the trend for ridiculously over-
complicated storylining is out of control this year. Is
it time for a purge?

Forwarded post:

I agree with the article, but would also add that the
quest for foreign sales is a big part of this as well.
Movies aiming for blockbuster status are enormously
expensive now, and to get the money back they must do
well overseas. But movies with a lot of dialog and
character development ofter don't do well in foreign
markets. Nobody, including Americans want to read
subtitles for two hours. So they change the formula to
minimize dialog, and show visually exiting things like
chase scenes, fights, and explosions. The plot becomes
incoherent, but it is visually exiting. Foreigners may
not understand that we don't understand it either.

There's also the desire by filmmakers to make it difficult for viewers.
Remember old movies where they would show the book the movie is based on
at the start, and then try to bring the book story to the screen,
perhaps with some voice over.
